GREEN SPLIT PEA SOUP

This one is great for winter or the rainy season. Split green peas are a great source of plant protein and fiber. They are relatively low in fat and sodium but can be substituted with complementary ingredients in cooking. They also provide essential vitamins and minerals such as potassium and iron.

Step 1: Wash your peas

This is very basic. Just empty the pack of peas into a bowl or strainer and rinse with tap water. This is to wash out any dirt or dust that may be present.

Step 2: Cook the peas

Add your peas to a large pot of water at a ratio of 1:2. Make sure the peas are completely emersed in the water. The cooking process is long (about an hour and 30 minutes) so it’s important to keep an eye on the pot and continuously add water. Cook till the peas are soft and start to lose shape.

Step 3: Cook the meat

Whatever your choice of meat, cook it in a separate pot with little spices for flavor. If you prefer pork trotters make sure to cook them until they are tender and soft.

Step 4: Transfer

To your pot of pea soup, add some salt and black pepper. Transfer the meat to the pot of peas (make sure not to transfer with too much broth). You can add any soup packet of choice, this is optional. Cook for a few more minutes (5 – 10 min).

It is optional to add veggies to your soup. At home, we usually add some potatoes and onions. I prefer the soup as is, 100% green pea soup with some meat.

This soup can be enjoyed with a side of fat cake (vetkoek), bread, or porridge (a nice hard porridge). Yummy! Try it out and let me know your thoughts. Enjoy.
